On my way to the park this morning, there was a lot on my mind. I began to pray for God to calm my thoughts and give me focus: “Father, empty me of me and fill me with Your love so that I can share You with those we serve.” As my rapid-fire thoughts began to slow, He reminded me of the scripture from Psalm 119:105 that would be read during our devotion time: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Such a short, to-the-point sentence—my Father used it to show me His power and comfort. God’s living, active, and true word should be the light that guides all of my actions. Period. As I think about my life, I see so many things that I’ve tried to use to light my path—self-sufficiency, ambition, being a good girl, meeting others’ expectations, etc. For a while, these motives might even work as illumination. However because none of them are rooted in God’s power, the little light they give quickly fades. I’m not alone in trying to light my path from weak power sources—everyone does this. That’s why we need God to save us!
I wasn’t the only person feeling out of control this morning. Several of the men I spoke with were absolutely overwhelmed by the harshness of their lives and they seemed to be almost at the end of their rope. Today’s scripture provides a rock-solid way to filter life, and we must trust Him to show us the right way. This way isn’t void of difficulties, but, through the power of His word, He will strengthen us to deal with whatever comes our way for His glory.
That is why the men’s Bible study that we offer in the park is so important—it delves deeper into God’s word and offers accountability to the participants. This is something all Christians need. Pray that more men will consistently attend the study. Also pray that God will give us the opportunity to begin a Bible study for women. More than serving good food, more than having good conversations, we want our friends in the park to come to know Christ as Savior and to develop deep, personal relationships with Him.
Thank you for praying for Grace’s Kitchen!
