Driving to the park this morning, I saw a man slowly walking along a downtown sidewalk. He was barefoot and appeared to be looking for something. Occasionally he would stop and pick up a coin. My heart broke as we passed him. Remembering that we had nonperishable food bags in the back seat, we circled the block to give him some food. He told us his name and thanked us for the food; we promised to pray for him and encouraged him to join us for breakfast. For whatever reason, he never came. As I watched for him among the many faces we served, I prayed that he would be encouraged today and then praised God that He is the sovereign Creator and intimately familiar with this precious man’s life. I am so thankful that because of God’s great love for us, we can extend love to others.
The numbers in the park were overwhelming again this week, but we were able to feed everyone who walked up to the table. Many volunteers engaged those who came to eat in conversation and were able to pray with some. The prayer requests we collected are harsh in their reality and we see why prayer is so important. Some situations are so insurmountable that only God can work in them. We are trusting that His power will be made perfect in our weakness and that He alone will be glorified!
