As our friends gathered this morning, we rejoiced to see old and new faces. God had answered some specific prayers during the week, and we were able to share in the joy that comes from seeing Him move. Our devotion time focused on this truth from Psalm 9:10—“Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.” What a wonderful word of comfort from our heavenly Father!
This week has been an emotionally difficult one for those of us who comprise Grace’s Kitchen. We have been serving meals in Pleasant Grove, one of the areas devastated by the horrible tornados that ripped through Alabama last week. Hopelessness overwhelmed me this morning as I thought about that destruction as well as the desperate needs of those we serve in the park. However as I shared this scripture during our devotion, He reminded me that He has not forsaken me. Reading this promise immediately began to soothe my troubled spirit because God’s Word is living and active.
A few minutes later, a woman that we had never met before sat down at a table to eat. I could tell she had been crying and felt a pull to her. After we introduced ourselves, I told her how overwhelming this week had been and that I just wanted to cry. She began to open up, telling me about the difficult circumstances she has faced that led to her living on the streets. Her story was heartbreaking! As I listened, the Spirit compelled me to share today’s verse with her. She told me that she trusts Christ as her Savior. I told her that the promise in Psalm 9:10 is for her because she “trusts in the Lord.” After we prayed together, I walked away praising God that He showed Himself to this precious woman and to me and that He will never forsake us, no matter what we do. What a mighty God we serve!
