Over a year ago, Grace’s Kitchen became a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit. We asked the Lord to use us and He has been faithful to do so. When we wrote our mission statement and wrestled with what Grace’s Kitchen would look like, we prayed that God would use us in whatever capacity we were called. We have tried to build a restaurant space but have been re-directed. We are in the process of trying to lease a space to build a commercial kitchen. The process has been painfully slow. But God has plans and He is revealing those to us little by little.
The devastation caused by the April 27 tornadoes in Alabama is widespread. There are so many communities affected that aid cannot possibly come to them all at once. God has allowed Grace’s Kitchen to be a small part of the healing process by using food as a vehicle to share His love.
Grace’s Kitchen has been responding to the tornado disaster relief efforts in a number of ways. To date, more than 3,000 food bags have been distributed in Tuscaloosa, Pratt City, Birmingham, Pleasant Grove, Hackleburg, Cordova, Cullman, and Shoal Creek. Hot meals have been delivered and served out of Bethel Baptist in Pleasant Grove, Freewill Baptist in Cordova, the Red Cross Disaster Relief Center in Hoover, and Antioch Baptist Church in Pratt City. Numerous volunteers have prepped thousands of meals in the kitchen at Hunter Street Baptist Church which have fed residents of affected communities, national guard, policemen, firefighters, rescue crews, and volunteers. Friends of Grace’s Kitchen have hand-written encouraging scripture on styrofoam to-go containers, put together wrapped silverware with scripture tied to the front, and marked encouraging scripture passages in new Bibles to be given out. Volunteers have prepared meals at home to supplement the need and have baked homemade desserts. Many have prayed, given, and gone. We are very thankful for the efforts of ALL of our volunteers and their willingness to participate.
We believe the tornado relief efforts are long-term and we plan to be available as we are needed. God placed us where we are with the resources we have “for such a time as this.” (Esther 4:14) We are humbled and we are thankful!
