“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” Our time in the park this morning began with these powerful words from Proverbs 18:10. During the devotion, the faces of several of our friends and volunteers reflected how God has been strong towers in their lives. Most in our circle are dealing with broken relationships, addictions, job loss, separation from children, fear, physical abuse, mental illness, homelessness—and the list could go on and on. Not everyone there knows Christ as Savior, Lord, and Treasure, but it was neat to see God glorified in the countenance of those who have taken Him at His word.
There have been times in my life when I have run to God for protection. But there have been many more times that I have tried to handle things on my own. Every time this happens, I fall flat on my face. These words from Proverbs reminded me that God is all we need, He is our strong tower!
My prayer today is that those in our circle who know Him as Savior will cling to Him in the midst of the storm and that those who don’t know Him will come to do so. Although we go home to a kindler and gentler life than those we serve, we all face many of the same issues. In my case these sins might seem more respectable to the world because of how they are disguised or cleaned up; the realities of life in the park are very raw. God has shown me over and over again in the past 18 months that I am in need of His grace just as much as the woman who cut a man because he was bothering her or the addict who came to breakfast high. This lesson is so humbling, but I’m so grateful that my loving Heavenly Father does not tire of teaching me. It is through my humility that He is glorified—the goal of my life!
Thank you for praying for Grace’s Kitchen and for those we serve. Nothing is more powerful than prayer.
