If you had told us three years ago that a typical Thursday morning would include hanging out with drug lords, murderers, and sex offenders, we wouldn’t have believed it. Who would have thought we would have discussions about how big the rats are and get used to seeing them run by our feet? Grace’s Kitchen has become such a regular part of our lives that we are more comfortable there than we are in the places we used to feel the most secure. However, today in our prayer time before the park, one of our volunteers prayed that God would shake our faith out of complacency and help us to have an atypical morning. He did just that.
One of our friends from the park has a new job wiping tables at the bus station near where we serve. We have made it our habit to take his breakfast to him since he cannot be there during our serving time. Today as two of our volunteers left the bus station, a man approached and asked if we were giving away food. He said he had spent his money on a bus ticket and had no money for food during the two days he would be traveling. We were able to give him enough food for his trip, but more importantly we were able to talk and pray with him. He was a believer and told us the Lord had prompted him to ask us if we had any food when he saw us give the breakfast to our friend from the park. We talked about the Lord’s faithfulness in every situation and he praised God during our prayer time for meeting his needs. We will likely never see this man again, but God placed an incredible opportunity right in our path to be His hands and feet. These are available to us daily, but many times we are too busy to notice. How different our lives would be if we asked God every day to give us opportunities to be used!
Going between two different worlds has many challenges, but we know that God has given us resources so that we can use them to serve others. They are not for our own use, but for His kingdom work. May we always be found faithful to His call.
