Praising God through song brings much joy to believers and this is something we have wanted to share with those we serve in the park. For the past two weeksour scriptures have come from the book of Psalms; these passages were actually written to be sung. This week the passage was Psalm 61:1-4—“Hear my cry, O God; give heed to my prayer. From the end of the earth, I call to you when my heart is faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been a refuge for me, a tower of strength against the enemy. Let me dwell in your tent forever; let me take refuge in the shelter of your wings.” These encouraging words have been set to music and one of our volunteers actually sang this scripture today in our devotion circle. It was so awesome to worship the Lord through the Word, through prayer, and through song!
Our time in the park was marked by contrasting emotions. We first experienced the joy of worship. Then as we greeted those who came to eat, we were confronted by the bleakness and sorrow of some of their circumstances. The most difficult things today were seeing several pregnant young women and the 2-year-old who came with his mom to eat breakfast. Our hearts were absolutely broken! These situations are overwhelming, and it’s so hard to not try to “fix” them. But that is not why God has called us to this ministry. He has called us to be obedient by sharing His love, mercy, and grace with those we feed. We have to accept that there is nothing we can do to change the realities—only He can change lives. Acknowledging this makes today’s scripture particularly poignant: No matter how difficult our circumstances or how overwhelmed we are, God is on His throne and willingly shelters us with His wings. He is our Strong Tower!
