We say this all the time, but it bears repeating: Grace’s Kitchen uses food as our vehicle to build relationshipswith those we serve and we do this for God’s glory. This morning as we visited with those who gathered in the park, we were reminded of the importance of conversation. Many of those we serve deal with extreme loneliness. Our team makes a point to not just say hello, but to actually sit down, ask questions, and get to know the person behind the persona of “needy.” Each week, we build on previously established friendships as well as make new connections.
God graciously encourages us through these precious people each week. Today one team member had a break-through conversation with a man who has been eating with us since October. This man is very bitter about how his life has turned out. The team member has shared Christ’s love with him on many occasions, but he usually dismisses the idea that God cares deeply for each of us. Today she was surprised when this man told her about a Bible study on prayer he had picked up at a shelter. She was so encouraged to hear that he is becoming more open to God. They plan to discuss what he is studying next week.
Another team member had a conversation with a man who is relatively new to the park. This man is truly lonely. He shared how he became homeless. This happened because he had a car accident that totaled his car. He had a delivery job and without a car, he was forced to quit. He asked for prayer to help him find a job, a car, and a place to live. The team member assured him that God cares for all the details in his life and that we would be praying for him.
There are so many needs represented in the park and we are often overwhelmed. However, we consider ourselves blessed to be able to invest in the lives of people that society marginalizes. No, we can’t solve the problems of poverty, addiction, and homelessness, but we can be obedient to what God has called us to do and share the life-changing love of Christ.
Thank you for your continued support and prayers for this ministry!
